The human chorionic gonadotropin hormone, also known as the pregnancy hormone, is made by the chorionic cells in the fetal part of the placenta. Commonly abbreviated as the hCG, its presence is usually detectable by immunologic means within days of fertilization and thus forms the foundation of the common pregnancy tests. In about 85% of normal pregnancies, the hCG doubles every 48-72 hours. As one gets further along, the hCG level also gets higher.
One of the main functions of the hCG is to prevent the disintegration of the corpus luteum of the ovary to maintain progesterone production which is critical during pregnancy. Progesterone enriches the uterus with a thick lining of blood vessels and capillaries so that it can sustain the growing fetus. HCG may also have additional functions such as improving the immune tolerance of the expectant mother.
Recently in the 1950s, Dr. A.T.W. Simeons discovered this hormone’s amazing capability to reduce weight in overweight and obese individuals. Somehow he accidentally discovered this fact while treating fat boys in India with a low-dose of hCG. He found out that after several days of taking the hormone, the group managed to lose fat rather than the lean, muscular tissues. He reasoned that the hCG must have helped to program the brain to promote the mobilization and consumption of the excess adipose deposits.
Today, this has evolved into the hCG diet protocol which consists of daily doses of low-level hCG shots partnered with an ultra-low-calorie diet. HCG comes in the form of injections and drops, although the drops are better recommended. The diet strictly limits into a 500-calorie daily diet, which may sometimes sound a little too strict. However, the intake of these hormones and the 500-calorie diet, accordingly, are the secrets to making this diet very effective in helping you reduce weight within a few days time.
